Srila’s Story: Diving into the Meaningful Work Volunteer Program

The Meaningful Work Volunteer Program offers individuals a chance to weave their skills and passions into the fabric of global change. Rooted in the belief that every act, no matter how small, holds the potential to transform lives, this program serves as a gateway for volunteers to immerse themselves in impactful experiences.

As we zoom out from the larger picture of the program to the personal narrative of one volunteer, get ready for a deep dive into what makes meaningful work truly impactful. Srila volunteered with Projects Abroad: Diving & Coral Reef Protection in Thailand, adding a unique dimension to her journey of service and personal growth. By taking a closer look at her experiences, we’ll unravel the layers of growth, connection, and purpose that define this meaningful experience.

Why did you apply for the Meaningful Work volunteer program?

I wanted to do something that gave my life more meaning and would help me appreciate the world more. I have stayed in my comfort zone my entire life, so I needed to push myself to get out there and do something that matters.

How did the grant support you through the volunteer experience?

I would never have been able to have this transformative experience without the grant. This trip has changed my life and put me on a completely new path. I am so much happier than I have ever been. I have more confidence than I ever did. Without this grant none of this would have been possible.

What impact did the volunteer experience have on your personal and professional life?

In my professional life it made me appreciate working here even more than I already do. The fact that I work somewhere that gives us such an incredible opportunity is not something I ever knew could be possible.

In my personal life- as mentioned I have more confidence than ever. Knowing that I was able to travel alone to a country on the other side of the planet has given me a new appreciation for life and my abilities. I no longer feel co-dependent, I can handle anything life throws at me and that I am stronger than I ever knew. Some of the personal things I dealt with during the trip would have seemed impossible to me in the past, especially alone! I am no longer afraid of change and trying new things, I continue to push myself out of my comfort zone daily.

What was most memorable about your experience?

Honestly just being down there, cleaning up the ocean and gathering all plastic waste was a surreal experience. Being underwater and new to diving there are a lot of things to be careful about and just watching myself improve everyday with things like buoyancy has made me so incredibly confident. Every single day that my diving improved made me realize that anything you set your mind to really is possible.
